It all started out with an update for Outlook v16 on the Mac, this stalled in the middle of the update and after a google search i found out that it would be better to download the full update direct from Microsoft as that would bypass the error i had experienced, along with many others. However, the update from their site would not work on my machine as it could only be used on macOS Sierra or above and i was still using macOS El Capitan and hadn’t bothered to update to Sierra.
So, i thought i would update to Sierra as i had been meaning to for a while but just hadn’t found the time.
Guess what?….. that update stalled during the process too!! Aaarrggh!

It had managed to process 2/3 of the update, and told me it had 12 minutes remaining, but that remained on the screen for hours….it lied!
Not knowing what to do i turned the computer off and on restart had the dreaded black screen with the code flicking up in the top left, it was not working and the update had failed badly.
After a quick Google i found a few solutions to try;
1. Start up the computer in Recovery Mode (hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys during startup), this brings up a choice of options
2. Use Disk Utility and run First Aid – i used that to check the hard drive and all was ok.
3. Next in the list was to “Install a new copy of MAC OS”, so i tried that but again Sierra the update failed! Nooooooooo!
4. Restart the machine again but this time in Internet Recovery Mode (hold down Command (⌘), Option (⌥) and R). It took quite a while to finish this process., and when compete it took me back to the normal recovery mode screen again, but was linked to Apple over the net.
5. I selected “Install a new copy of MAC OS” again and this time was informed that it would install Mojave instead, I was unsure of doing this but went for it as i needed to get back to work. It took about an hour to install and after completing my Mac restarted and looked like it was installing yet again!! But this time it started further along the process line and only took 45 minutes. No idea why it seemed to happened twice but it didn’t freeze anywhere.
The update worked perfectly and I’m now back up and rather liking the dark mode option!
So big thank you to Prateek90 on Mac Rumors Forum for the fix and for saving my day!
